Classes in Indian Railways

Train CLASSES :

  1. First class Air-Conditioned (AC) (Code:1A). The Executive class in Shatabdi type trains is also treated as Ist AC.
  2. AC 2-tier sleeper (Code:2A)
  3. First class (Code:FC)
  4. AC 3 Tier (Code:3A)
  5. 3 E - AC 3 Tier Economy
  6. AC chair Car (Code:CC)
  7. Sleeper Class (Code:SL)
  8. Second Sitting (Code:2S)

ACCOMMODATION TYPES : Berths , Seats, Chair car
Indian Railways Train Booking Classes
  • 1A First class AC:
  • This is the most expensive class, where the fares are almost at par with air fare. There are eight cabins (including two coupes) in the full AC 
  • First Class coach and three cabins (including one coupe) in the half AC First Class coach. The coach has an attendant to help the passengers. 
  • Bedding is included with the fare in IR. This air conditioned coach is present only on popular routes and can carry 18 passengers (full coach) or 10 
  • passengers (half coach). The sleeper berths are extremely wide and spacious. The coaches are carpeted, have sleeping accommodation and have privacy 
  • features like personal coupes. This class is available on broad gauge and metre gauge trains
  • 2A AC-Two tier:
  • These air-conditioned coaches have sleeping berths across eight bays. Berths are usually arranged in two tiers in bays of six, four across the width 
  • of the coach and two berths longways on the other side of the corridor, with curtains along the gangway or corridor. Bedding is included with the 
  • fare. A broad gauge coach can carry 48 passengers (full coach) or 20 passengers (half coach). This class is available on broad gauge and metre gauge trains.
  • FC First class:
  • Same as 1AC but without air conditioning. No bedding is available in this class. The berths are wide and spacious. There is a coach attendant to help the passengers. This class has been phased out on most of the trains and is rare to find. However narrow gauge trains to hill stations have this class.
  • 3A AC three tier:
  • Air conditioned coaches with 64 sleeping berths. Berths are usually arranged as in 2AC but with three tiers across the width and two longways as before giving eight bays of eight. They are slightly less well-appointed, usually no reading lights or curtained off gangways. Bedding is included with fare. It carries 64 passengers in broad gauge. This class is available only on broad gauge
  • 3E AC three tier (Economy):
  • Air conditioned coaches with sleeping berths, present in Garib Rath Trains. Berths are usually arranged as in 3AC but with three tiers across the width and three longways. They are slightly less well-appointed, usually no reading lights or curtained off gangways. Bedding is not included with fare
  • CC AC chair car:
  • An air-conditioned seater coach with a total of five seats in a row used for day travel between cities
  • EC Executive class chair car:
  • An air-conditioned coach with large spacious seats and legroom. It has a total of four seats in a row used for day travel between cities. This class of travel is only available on Shatabdi Express trains
  • SL Sleeper class:
  • The sleeper class is the most common coach on IR, and usually ten or more coaches could be attached. These are regular sleeping coaches with three berths vertically stacked. In broad gauge, it carries 72 passengers per coach
  • 2S Seater class:
  • Same as AC Chair car, but with bench style seats and without the air-conditioning. These may be reserved in advance or may be unreserved.
  • UR Unreserved:
  • The cheapest accommodation. The seats are usually made up of pressed wood in older coaches but cushioned seats are found in new coaches. These coaches are usually over-crowded and a seat is not guaranteed. Tickets are issued in advance for a minimum journey of more than 24 hours. Tickets issued are valid on any train on the same route if boarded within 24 hours of buying the ticket.

IRCTC (Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation) allow Passenger to check there PNR status using mobile phone through Sms . You can SMS your Pnr number to indian railways and then you will get a response back with reservation details including train information, train schedule,seat availability, train fare, train status, train time table, etc. such information on a mobile phone

Takal Reservations - Indian Railways


while presenting Railway Budget 2009-10 in the parliament on 03-07-2009, it has been decided to reduce Tatkal Charges as given below.
The Tatkal Charges have been fixed as a percentage of fare at the rate of 10% of basic fare for second class and 30% of basic fare for all other classes. Tatkal tickets will be issued for actual distance of travel, instead of end-to-end, subject to the distance restriction applicable to the train. The same Tatkal berth/seat may be booked in multiple legs till preparation of charts. At the time of preparation of charts, unutilized portion may be released to the General RAC/Waiting list passengers.
Tatkal facility is also available in Executive Class of Shatabadi Express trains also, by earmarking 10% of the accommodation available i.e. 5 seats per coach. Tatkal booking opens at 10 AM on One days in advance actual date of journey excluding date of journey w.e.f. of 10.07.2012(commercial circular no:43 of 2012). e.g. for train leaving on 6th, Tatkal Booking will Commence at 10 AM on 5th. No duplicate Tatkal tickets shall be issued. Duplicate Tatkal tickets shall be issued only in exceptional cases on payment of full fare including.

Tatkal charges:

Tatkal tickets shall be issued only on production of one of the ten prescribed proofs of identity shown under (as mentioned in Commercial Circular No.68 of 2012 issued vide letter No.2011/TG-I/20/P/ID dated 01.11.2012) as per procedure explained below:
Proofs of identity for train ticket 
1.Voter Photo identity card issued by Election Commision of India. 2.Passport 3.PAN Card issued by Income Tax Department. 4.Driving Licence issued by RTO.
5.Photo identity card having serial number issued by Central/State Government. 6.Student Identity Card with photograph issued by recognized School/College for their students.
7.Nationalized Bank Passbok with photograph. 8.Credit cards issued by banks with laminated photograph. 9.Unique Identification Card "Aadhaar".
10.Photo identity cards having serial number issued by Public Sector Undertaking of State/Central Government, District Administration, Municipal bodies and Penchant Administration.
a. For this purpose, a self attested photo copy of the proof of identity of anyone passenger shall be attached to the requisition slip.
b. The details of the identity proof shall be captured by the system and indicated on the reserved tickets as well on the reservation chart.
c. It will not be mandatory for the passenger(s) to go to the counter to book the Tatkal ticket, however, the proof will have to be sent in the aforementioned manner.
d. During the journey, the passenger, whose identity card number has been indicated on the ticket, will have to produce original proof of identity indicated on the ticket, failing which all the passengers booked on the ticket shall be treated as traveling without ticket and charged accordingly. Indication will come on the ticket regarding carrying the same original proof of identity during the journey, as indicated on the ticket.
e. If the passenger whose identity card number is indicated on the ticket is not traveling, all other passengers booked on that ticket, if found
traveling in train, will be treated as traveling without ticket and charged accordingly.
Agents / RTSAs/Web service agents/Web agents of IRCTC are restricted from the booking Tatkal tickets between 1000 hours and 1200 hours. This restriction shall be enforced through frequent inspection at the counters. The agents both web service agents and web agents shall also be restricted from booking Tatkal tickets on the internet between 1000 hours and 1200 hours. Even for internet booking for Tatkal tickets, the passenger shall enter the identity proof type and number, which is to be used for travel. These details shall be printed on the ERS/indicated on the VRM/MRM as well as in the reservation chart. It will be possible to book a maximum of only four passengers per PNR forTatkal tickets. The web services agents of IRCTC will be permitted to book only one Tatkal ticket per train per day on the internet. The facility of change of name is not permitted on the bookings made under Tatkal scheme.

TDRs are not being issued for waiting list tickets.

REFUNDS - No refund will be granted on cancellation of confirmed Tatkal tickets/duplicate tatkal ticket except in case of circumstances mentioned in para 2 of instructions contained in Commercial Circular no. 53 of 2006 issued vide letter no. 2006/TGII/ 20/P/Tatkal, dated 30.06.2006. However,full refund of fare and tatkal charges will be granted on the tickets booked under Tatkal scheme in the following circumstances :- If the train is delayed by more than 3 hours at the journey originating point of the passenger & not the boarding point if the passenger's journey originating point and boarding point are different. If the train is to run on a diverted route and passenger is not willing to travel. If the train is to run on diverted route and boarding station or the destination or both the stations are not on the diverted route. In case of non attachment of coach in which Tatkal accommodation has been earmarked and the passenger has not been provided accommodation in the same class. If the party has been accommodated in lower class and does not want to travel. In case the party travels in lower class, the passenger will be given refund of difference of fare and also the difference of Tatkal charges, if any.

Procedure for Cancellation of I-Tickets

Cancellation of tickets before departure of trains :
Cancellation of I-Tickets can be done at any computerised reservation counter across the country and a cancellation ticket obtained. NO CASH REFUND will be given. Bank charges that are being levied by the Payment Gateways/Banks are not subject to refund in the event of cancellation of tickets by the Customer. Service Charge is also not refundable. The refund amount will be credited to the respective account electronically, the following day of cancellation. Refund of fare shall be made after deduction of cancellation charge of the fare as follows:
If a RAC/waitlisted is cancelled then Rs. 20/- (Per Passenger) shall be deducted. If a confirmed ticket is cancelled more than 24 hrs before the scheduled departure of the train, flat cancellation charges shall be deducted @ Rs.70/- for AC First Class/Executive Class, Rs.60/- for AC 2 Tier/AC 3 Tier/First Class/AC Chair car, Rs.40/- for Sleeper Class and Rs.20/- for
Second Class. Cancellation charges are per passenger. If a confirmed ticket is cancelled within 24 hrs and upto 4 hours before the scheduled departure of the train, cancellation charges shall be 25% of the fare subject to the minimum flat rate mentioned in the above clause. Cancellation of tickets after departure of trains I-Tickets can also be cancelled in the above manner, at the boarding station, within 4 hours before the scheduled departure of the train and Upto 3 hrs after actual departure of train for tickets upto a distance of 200kms Upto 6 hrs after actual departure of train for tickets upto a distance of 201-500kms. Upto 12 hrs after actual departure of train for tickets over a distance of 500kms. In all the above cases, cancellation charges will be 50% of the fare subject to the minimum flat rate mentioned in the above clause. To cancel tickets after the above period Surrender the I-Ticket with the Station Master and obtain a Ticket Deposit Receipt. Prefer your claim for refund to the following address attaching the original copy of the Ticket Deposit Receipt:

IRCTC will process the refund claim with the Railway Administration and refund granted by the Railway shall be credited to your account.
Refund claims under above clause may require at least 90 days or more for processing.

Cancellation of I-Tickets in case of trains cancelled
I-Ticket can be cancelled upto 72 hrs after the scheduled departure of train at any computerised reservation counter.
The above rules of Indian Railways are subject to change without prior notice
About TDR
TDR ( Ticket Deposit Receipt) – If the customer was not able to perform the journey due to any of the following reason :
  1. Train Cancelled.
  2. Train Late More Than Three Hours and Passenger Not Travelled.
  3. Difference Of Fare In Case proper Coach Not Attached.
  4. AC Failure
  5. Travelled Without Proper ID Proof.
  6. Wrongly Charged BY TTE.
  7. Party Partially Travelled.
  8. Passenger Not Travelled.
  9. Train Diverted And Passenger Not Travelled.
  10. Train Diverted And Train Not Touching Boarding Station.
  11. Train Diverted And Train Not Touching Destination Station.
  12. Passenger Not Travelled As Reservation Provided In Lower Class.
  13. Passenger Not Travelled Due To Ticket In RAC After Chart Preparation.
  14. Train Terminated Short Of Destination.
  15. Party Partially Confirmed/Waitlisted And Waitlisted Passengers Did Not Travel.
  16. Party Partially Confirmed/Waitlisted And All Passengers Did Not Travel.
  17. Party Could Not Cancel Because Chart Prepared At Originating Or Previous Remote Location.
  18. Train Missed As Connecting Train Was Late.
  19. Change In Reservation Status From Confirmed To Waitlisted/Part Waitlisted/RAC After Chart Preparation.
  20. After Charting No Room Provided.
  21. Difference Of Fare As Passenger Travelled In Lower Class.
  22. Passenger Unable to Travel Due to Wrong Departure Time Updated in PRS System.
  23. Passenger Not Travelled Due To Coach Damage.
  24. Unable To Cancel Due To Error Message Received From PRS System.
  25. Fare Difference Due To Decrease In Fare Amount.
TDR Rules

The TDR Refund will be processed as per Extant Railway Rules.
TDR should be filed within 30 days of Departure of Train.
E-ticket refund request (after chart preparation) can be filed online.
In case of i-ticket, online refund request is not allowed. For i-ticket please follow the following procedure:
Surrender the I-Ticket with the Station Master and obtain a Ticket Deposit Receipt.
Send your claim for refund to the following address attaching the original copy of the TDR to:

Internet Ticketing Center,
State Entry Road, New Delhi - 110 055.
IRCTC will process the refund claim with the Railway Administration and refund granted by the Railway shall be credited to your account.
Refund Rule

In case train is cancelled by the Rlys due to accidents, breaches or floods, Bandh or Rail Roko agitation etc- full refund of the fare of entire booked journey will be granted .On line cancellation can be done up to 72 hrs. In case of train running late by more than three hours & the passenger not performing journey on this account ,full refund is permitted subject to
the condition that the ticket is surrendered/TDR obtained in case of I-ticket, if is in E-ticket customer should file online/mail to IRCTC within the prescribed time limits which are as under-.
Ticket distance Prescribed time
Upto 200 Kms 3 Hrs
201- 500 Kms 6 Hrs
More than 500 Kms 12 Hrs
In case proper coach is not attached-Difference of fare between the booked class and lower travelled class will be refunded. Certificate from the TTE (in original) for the lower class travelled is must to claim for refund. a. In case of AC failure of AC1class/Executive class- Difference of fare between AC1class or Executive class and First Class will be refunded for the distance AC not worked. Certificate from the TTE (in original) for the AC not worked is must to claim for refund. b. In case of AC failure of AC2/AC3 class- Difference of fare between AC2/AC3 class and Sleeper Class will be refunded for the distance AC not worked. Certificate from the TTE (in original) for the AC not worked is must to claim for refund. c. In case of AC failure of AC chair car class- Difference of fare between AC chair car class and second class will be refunded for the distance AC not worked. Certificate from the TTE (in original) for the AC not worked is must to claim for refund. In case Travelling without proper ID proof-will be considered without ticket and will be charged accordingly. Chief Commercial Manager/Refunds can be approached for discretionary refund. Excess fare ticket (EFT) (in original) issued by the TTE is must to claim for refund. In case of wrongly charged by the TTE-full refund will be granted by the Chief Commercial Manager/Refunds. Excess fare ticket (EFT) (in original) issued by the TTE is must to claim for refund.
In case party/ family partially travelled- refund will be granted by the Chief Commercial Manager/Refunds as per rule. Certificate from the TTE (in original) for deboarding before the destination has to be obtain and submitted for claiming for refund. In case passenger not travelled- refund will be granted by the Chief Commercial Manager/Refunds as per extant Railway rule. Partially used reserved ticket by Rajdhani, Shatabdi and Jan Shatabadi Exp- No refund is allowed. In case Rlys is not able to provide accommodation-full refund will be granted.
Note-Certificate from the TTE (in original) for the AC not worked or Excess fare ticket(EFT) (in original) issued by the TTE for wrongly charged or Certificate from the TTE(in original) for the less passenger travelled may be submitted to the following address along with the application to claim for refund
